STORIES THAT MATTER

For the fourth time in a row Euregion Film Festival 2019 is going to open its doors for the professionals, new filmmakers and audiences to enjoy Dutch and international films with a special focus on the Golden Triangle Netherlands – Belgium – Germany. Save the date to visit special screenings, short film competitions, talk to the directors at CineTalks, join Shorts and Feature Labs and network at the Roundtable: Euregion Co-production.

Euregion Film Festival will take you to an inspiring world of films where you can learn, develop and be motivated to create more quality films. Starting with a screening on Thursday, our special guest Stijn Bouma will talk about his films Regained Memory and Lejla. Afterwards Remy Kooi will have the avant-premiere of his new film Soeverein. On Friday you will be a witness of launching the first ever Feature Script and Producers Lab in Limburg with coach Denis Vaslin (Volya Films) and talk about co-production possibilities at Roundtable: Euregion Co-production with Harro van Staverden (PHANTA BASTA!), Denis Vaslin and other special guests. Just after that, you are welcome to watch international and Limburgian short films at Official Competition 1 and special screenings and premieres of the films Grenzeloos, Voor Galg en Rad and Convoi Exceptionnel. Saturday will feature the very first Production Design workshop in Limburg (with Genaro Rosato and Nicole van Kilsdonk), DocCampus with Bart Hölscher and  Janet van den Brand, FilmCampus with Ibo Karatay, Pitching training with Joost de Vries (Apostlab, co-producer of Lobster), the Pitch contest and the second part of the Official Competition with an Award Show. In the evening you can have a chance to meet a talented director Janet van den Brand and a cameraman Thimothy Wennekes while they will be presenting their documentary film Ceres during CineTalk which had a premiere at Berlinale Film Festival 2018. On Sunday you can take part in the Directing Actors Masterclass with Remy van Heugten and you are welcome to check out the fantasy film An Impossibly Small Object, and the animation This Magnificent Cake! on Monday.

Official Short Film Competition will be announced on February 20, 2019.

Euregion Film Festival (EFF) takes place from 21-25 March in Schunck (Filmhuis de Spiegel) in Heerlen. You can buy a passe-partout, but also separate tickets or group tickets. You will find the options for tickets from February 2019 below. Tickets for individual program sections are available from €5. Earlybird tickets (25% off the regular price) are available until one week before the festival, after which the regular rate applies. Members and friends benefit from discounts up to 35%. Day 1 - Thursday, March 21

Film | Stijn Bouma special (Regained Memory and Lejla) & Avant-premiere Soeverein (NL)

The special screening of the two films Regained Memory and Lejla will start with a CineTalk with the director Stijn Bouma who will talk about his films, festivals and future international perspectives of Dutch cinema. He will be joined by Remy Kooi who will present his newly finished short film Soeverein and talk about CineSud talent and perspectives of Limburgian filmmaking.

The screening will start with the short film Lejla, which was selected to Cannes Cinéfondation 2017 and is about a young woman who is trying to change her life. It will be followed by a Karlovy Vary 2018 selection Regained Memory which is a sensitive portrait in which a widower wrestles with his personal past and the history of his country. Next after that, a tragicomedy Soeverein, about a lonely Limburgian customs officer who protects his small country bureaucratically until he’s confronted with a persistent stranger.

Sit down and enjoy interesting and inspiring talk from a young, but incredibly talented filmmakers!

Day 2 - Friday, March 22

Script Lab (Day 1) (EN)

On the first day of the Script Lab the participants will learn about story ideas, synopsis and treatment development, story elements and look at case studies of successful scripts.

The coach for the Script Lab will be announced February 20, 2019.

The very first Script Lab of the Netherlands is aimed at developing feature scripts of the participants who have written or directed one or two short films and are currently working on the idea for a feature film. The course will run for a year, starting in March and will feature four weekend sessions and online follow-ups. The Script Lab course will be closely connected to the Producers Lab, while the participants from both courses will be working on each others projects with the aim of an ongoing collaboration after the end of the labs.

Producers Lab (Day 1) (EN)

On the first day of Producers Lab, Denis Vaslin from Volya Films will give a lecture From Idea To Financing and talk about the role of the producer as well as financing possibilities in the Netherlands and Europe (and the rest of the world), how to kickstart a project when it is still an idea, and what to pay attention to, which mistakes to avoid. He will also present a Case Study of the projects from his own experience.

Denis Vaslin started Volya Films in 2004 after moving to the Netherlands from France. He has (co)produced more than thirty fiction and documentary films. His latest film A land Imagine has won numerous awards at Locarno Film Festival 2018. Denis has been a Torino FilmLab Decision Maker since 2009. He is a graduate of the Binger Lab in 2004, EAVE 2006 and EURODOC 2007, a member of the European Film Academy.

The very first talent development program Producers Lab of the Netherlands  is created with the purpose to train and advance the skills of the producers of Limburg and the Netherlands to develop a feature film or a short film project from scratch. Starting in March during Euregion Film Festival the Producers Lab will be closely connected to the Script Lab, while the participants from both courses will be working on each others projects with the aim of an ongoing collaboration after the end of the labs. The participants can submit their own current project they are working on or if they would like to work on a feature film in the near future they can use a project from the participants of Script Lab.

Roundtable: Euregion co-production & Networking drinks (EN)

Together with film professionals and special guests you can discuss the possibilities of co-productions in the Golden Triangle Netherlands – Belgium – Germany. Meet producers Denis Vaslin (Volya Films), Harro van Staverden (PHANTA BASTA!) and funding representatives and ask specific questions about your current or future project.

The final lists of special guests will be published on March 1.

Film | Grenzeloos, Convoi Exceptionnel & Voor Galg en Rad (EN)

Welcome to the two avant-premieres of Grenzeloos and Convoi Exceptionnel and a special screening of Voor Galg en Rad.

During CineTalk the directors Yorn Heijnen, Paul Haans and Genio de Groot will talk about the filming process of their films and their aspirations for the future. The three completely different films will show you how diverse filmmaking in Limburg can be: from an experimental road movie (through the Euregion countryside) to a tragicomedy about a single man in his forties and his dying mother who only has one wish, to become a grandmother, or a historical film about the myth-enshrouded Limburgian past.

Day 3 - Saturday, March 23

Shorts Lab: Workshop | Production Design (EN)

During this Production Design Workshop the participants will learn from Genaro Rosato and director Nicole van Kilsdonk all about the visual appearance of a film and how it can stimulate moods, contrast features and appeal to the audiences. Which artistic style fits your film? How to best transport the desired moods, messages, concepts and ideas onto the screen which will ultimately move the audiences just the way it should.

With a professional Production Designer you will work on the art direction of your own short film and find the best solutions for your story. The coach for the workshop will be announced on February 15.

1-2 representatives from each film (director and Production Designer) are allowed to join for the price of one ticket.

FilmCampus: Script and development coaching (NL)

During this coaching six participants, who are busy with their own short film project, will receive individual support and advice on the development of their scripts in the setting of a group workshop by development executive and producer Ibo Karatay.

Ibo Karatay, being interested in literature and philosophy early on, attended classes by Jos Stelling, Paula van Oest and Tamara Bos himself and decided to become a writer and director for film. Since February 2015 he works as a development executive at Rinkel Film. He also co-founded Alchemic Film together with Paul Oscar. The company produces artistically independent films. They also develop and produce short films and features.

DocCampus: Lectures and coaching (EN)

During DocCampus filmmaker Bart Hölscher will give a lecture with valuable information about how to (kick)start a documentary. Janet van den Brand’s documentary feature film Ceres, which will be screened in the evening later that day, serves as a Case Study for the participants. Later on both, Bart and Janet, will offer a personal coaching on the participants’ own projects. Don’t miss a chance to present your project to Bart Hölscher and maybe your film can be produced by him!

Bart Hölscher is a professional filmmaker since 1992. He started by making many commercials, films for companies and educational films. By now his main activities include the making of tv programmes and documentaries. Next to that he is always busy  with the planning of new films.

Janet van den Brand is a Dutch filmmaker currently living in Brussels. From 2007 to 2010 she did her Bachelor in Documentary Film studies at St. Joost Breda. After that she studied Fiction Film at St. Lukas Brussels. In 2015 she also finished a Master degree in Film Directing at KASK Ghent. Next to her studies she has always been busy with the production of fiction and documentary short films. Ceres (2018) is her first feature length documentary.

For the coaching 1-2 representatives per film (director and DOP) are allowed to join for the price of one ticket.

Script Lab & Producers Lab (Day 2): Pitch Training (EN)

During the second day of the course the participants will get a pitch training by Joost de Vries in which they will learn how to pitch a project and a strategy, what to pay special attention to as well as discuss possible mistakes and respective solutions.

Later on, The Script Lab participants will then pitch their scripts to the Producers Lab participants. The latter then choose a project that they will be working on as a Case Study during the annual course.

Next to that the Producers Lab participants will be introduced to a producer’s approach to script and development as well as the workings of a structural analysis and creative production. They will also learn how to apply to film funds and application forms as well as how to present ideas to key international film institutions and receive information about the eligible funds for regional filmmakers.

Joost de Vries was a producer and CEO of Amsterdam based renowned production company Lemming Film for over 20 years. In 2016 Joost decided to establish new company An Original Picture, which is focused on international productions. Moreover, he is a Managing Director of APostLab, post production workshops, training and network. As a producer Joost de Vries is known for The Lobster (Academy Award-nominated and Cannes Jury Prize-winner), Oblivion Verses (Venice FIPRESCI Prize-winner), Humidity (Berlinale Forum 2016).

Don’t miss the second part of the Official Competition where international and Euregional films will compete for the Best Film! The awards will be handed out during the Award Show right after the film screening and a Q&A session with the respective filmmakers. Which films will make it?

After all the excitement you are welcome to stay for a chat and a drink where you will have the chance of talking to filmmakers and industry professionals.

The selected short films will be published on February 20.

Film | Ceres incl. Q&A (NL)

After director Janet van den Brand has also coached the DocCampus participants her poetic and tangible documentary feature film Ceres that follows four children as they experience the natural cycle of life on a farm, will finally be screened. Make sure to join the screening as well as the CineTalk with Janet and the film’s cinematographer Thimothy Wennekes in which they will answer various questions about the film and its production.

Day 4 - Sunday, March 24

Shorts Lab: Coaching | Directing Actors (NL, EN)

During this intensive coaching the participants will learn how to get the best out of their actor’s performance. They will not only learn how to communicate their own vision of a film but also to closely work with the actors to develop this vision even further and let themselves be inspired by the actors’ own take on the characters and scenes.

Film | An Impossibly Small Object (NL)

Don’t miss out on this special screening of David Verbeek’s meditative narrative. In the film a photographer takes a photo of a little girl on the nightly streets of Taipei which brings his own childhood back into his consciousness. Slowly he starts to realise that the girl’s childhood and his own have surprising similarities.

Film | Bloeistraat 11 & This Magnificent Cake! (NL)

This year’s Euregion Film Festival will end with another special screening of two films. Bloeistraat 11 by Nienke Deutz, which received the main prize at the international animation festival of Annecy, is a short film about two best friends, a special summer and the struggles of beginning puberty. Afterwards the animation film This Magnificent Cake! by Emma De Swaef en Marc James Roels, which is set in colonial Africa at the end of the 19th century and tells the story of five different characters, will be screened.

Joost de Vries

Joost de Vries was a producer and CEO of Amsterdam based renowned production company Lemming Film for over 20 years. In 2016 Joost decided to establish new company An Original Picture, which is focused on international productions. Moreover, he is a Managing Director of APostLab, post production workshops, training and network.

Denis Vaslin

Remy van Heugten

Remy van Heugten is prijswinnend filmregisseur en bekend van het succesvolle en geprezen Gluckauf. Remy studeerde af aan de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Genk en de Nederlandse Film en Televisie Academie en volgde een spelregie cursus in de Verenigde Staten. Zijn meest recente, persoonlijke film Gluckauf won vier Gouden Kalveren – waaronder voor Beste Film en Beste Regie – en werd in totaal tien keer genomineerd. Ook in het buitenland viel de film op. Verder maakte hij als regisseur onder meer Witte Vis, Valentino en regisseerde hij diverse televisieseries, zoals Feuten, De 12 van Oldenheim en Hoe Overleef ik?.

 

Harro van Staverden

Harro van Staverden is producer of Code M, Storm and Achtste-Groepers huilen niet. Currently he runs Phanta Basta!, a part of Phanta Vision and responsible for productions for mainly family and young people.

During the Euregion Film Festival, Harro will be guest speaker during Roundtable: Euregion co-production.
