The very first Script Lab of the Netherlands is aimed at developing feature scripts of the participants who have written or directed one or two short films and are currently working on the idea for a feature film.

The course will run for a year, starting in March and will feature four weekend sessions with coaching, lectures and panels and online follow-ups with script editors. The Script Lab course will be closely connected to the Producers Lab, while the participants from both courses will be working on each others projects with the aim of an ongoing collaboration after the end of the labs. Mentors for the first edition of Script Lab are Marietta von Hausswolff (Torino Film Lab, Sundance Labs) and Moniek Kramer (Script Academy, Lucia de B.). Next to that there will be several guest coaches/lectures. * find all the coaches in the programm overview below.

Participating in the programme with your own project costs €500 excl. BTW (payment by instalments possible). Send in your application before March 5th. A selection committee chooses which filmmakers will be selected to take part. The announcement will follow in the second week of March.

Filmmakers can also participate without a project. You can then take part in the public programme of the four writer’s room weekends. In this case participation costs €400 excl. VAT and you are independent from the committee’s selection. On the first day of the Script Lab the participants will learn about story ideas, synopsis and treatment development, story elements and look at case studies of successful scripts.

The coaches for the lecture are a Script Doctor Marietta von Hausswolff (Torino Film Lab, Sundance Labs) and Moniek Kramer (Script Academy, Lucia de B.).

This program-part will be in English.

Writers Rooms: Synopsis Feedback - Marietta von Hausswolff, Moniek Kramer (EN)

During the Writers Room group session, together with Script Doctor Marietta von Hausswolff (Torino Film Lab, Sundance Labs) and Moniek Kramer (Script Academy, Lucia de B.) the participants of Script Lab will discuss the synopsis (30 min. per project), receive feedback and homework for the Writers Room Session 3 (March 24).

The Writers Room is only for Script Lab participants.

Pitching Training: How to Pitch a Project - Joost de Vries (EN)

During the second day of the course the participants will get a pitch training by Joost de Vries (The Lobster) in which they will learn how to pitch a project and a strategy, what to pay special attention to as well as discuss possible mistakes and respective solutions.

This program-part will be in English and Dutch.

Pitch Contest

Pitch Contest is a part of the pitch training, during with four selected filmmakers will pitch their projects to the jury, among which are Hans de Wolf, Bart Hölscher, Joost de Vries, Nicole van Kilsdonk, Moniek Kramer and have a chance to win € 2000 production budget as well as coachings for your newest film project.

If you are participating in Pitch Training with Joost de Vries, you are welcome to join the audience to decide for yourself which film you think deserves the prize for the best pitch.

The submissions are closed.

The selected five participants will be announced on March 5.

The winner of the Pitch Contest will be announced during the Award Show later the same evening.

Lecture: The Producer’s Approach to Script and Development - Joost de Vries (EN)

Joost de Vries will give a lecture during which he will introduce a producer’s approach to script and development as well as a structural analysis and creative production, which will give the participants of Script Lab the understanding of how the producers choose their projects.

The lecture is included in the price of the Pitch Training.

Lecture: Structure of Script - Moniek Kramer (NL)

At this lecture Moniek Kramer will talk about the most important topic – the structure of feature script: What are its key elements, how to determine turning points and sequences, how to make a strong script and plot only when it is still a structure.

Moniek Kramer will talk about character development, creating recognisable characters & characters’ background, developing a character’s voice, character’s behaviour patterns and how to involve viewers and readers’ with your characters.

Personal Meetings of Scriptwriter-Producer

During the kick-off in March the participants of Producers Lab will choose one project of the participants of Script Lab which they will work on as a Case Study project for 12 months.

In June the match Producer-Scriptwriter will have a first personal meeting to discuss the project, give feedback on the treatment and set the goals for the development.

Just after the sessions in March, the scriptwriters will have a task to work on their treatments for the feature films.

The scriptwriters will need to send in the projects no later than July 30, 2019 for the revision. The participants will get the feedback at one 45-minute online session with Marietta von Hausswolff within the period on August 5-10.

During the online session the scriptwriters will get the first feedback from Script Doctor Marietta von Hausswolff on their treatments and will have a task to work on the outline.

The participants will get the feedback at one 45-minute online session within the period on August 5-10.

Just after the online sessions in August with Marietta von Hausswolff, the scriptwriters will have a task to work on their outline for the feature films.

The scriptwriters will need to send in the projects no later than August 28, 2019 for the revision. The participants will get the feedback from mentor Moniek Kramer during the Writers Room on September 13.

During the Writers Room group session, together with mentor Moniek Kramer the participants of Script Lab will discuss their outline that they have been working in August and prepare for the scene-by-scene breakdown.

How can we refine the dialogues and scenes?

Just after the sessions in September with Moniek Kramer and Jolein Laarman, the scriptwriters will have a task to work on their S-B-S breakdowns for the feature films.

The scriptwriters will need to send in the projects no later than October 30, 2019 for the revision. The participants will get the feedback from mentor Marietta von Hausswolff during the online session with the period November 5-9, 2019.

Lecture: Negotiating skills

Together with scriptwriters from Script Lab learn what is the most important when negotiating about your projects? What are psychological point of negotiation? Why is it important to come to a reasonable agreement with your partners, crew, cast and how to do that?

The coach for this lecture will be announced not later than September 2019.

Just after the sessions in January with Moniek Kramer, the scriptwriters will have only one week to rewrite script and sent to the Script Doctor.

The scriptwriters will need to send in the projects no later than January 20, 2020 for the revision. The deadline is very strict! The participants will get the feedback from mentor Marietta von Hausswolff during the Writers Room session in Rotterdam in the end of January.

Congratulations! It is a festive evening, which will celebrate the appearance the first feature producers & scriptwriters in Limburg. Now, after finishing their course, they are ready to set off into the real world of film and start developing the project which they were working on the whole year!

During this evening, the Producers & Script Lab participants will take part in pitch contest and will win the first amount into the development of their projects!

CineSud Talents To Cannes

All the interested producers from Producers Lab can apply for the CineSud Talents To Cannes program and go the Cannes Film Festival to search for producers, partners, distributors and ensure the further development of their projects.

The submissions will be open in February 2020.

The CineSud Talents To Cannes program is not included in the general fee. The fee will be announced in February 2020.

Marietta von Hausswolff - Script Doctor

Marietta is a Swedish screenwriter for TV and film, and an international script consultant whose work over the last 11 years includes Sundance Labs, Torino Film Lab, Binger Amsterdam, Biennale College Venice, Feature Expanded, Hezaya (Doha), Boost Rotterdam FF, NFF Talent, Tiff Studio Toronto FF, Cinelink Drama Sarajevo, B3 Media, Lux London, Talent Campus Berlinale (Script Station) and Sarajevo, Bridging the Dragon, MidPoint and Locarno Open Doors. She has done script development in Russia, China, Nepal, Myanmar and Pakistan. She’s been in international juries, such as CPH Dox and San Miguel main competition. She’s studied Film and TV at Tisch NYC and is a member of the European Film Academy and the Swedish Drama Union. She worked with development and writing of TV-series in Scandinavia for companies such as SVT Drama and Pearson-Freemantle and SAM. In 2018 she wrote for Adam Price’s (Borgen) new Netflix series.The films she has been part of have competed in film festivals all around the world, such as The Babadook, Nancy, Hunting Season, Diamond Island, The Fits, Le Quattro Volte, Svinalängorna, Too late to die young, Children of Sarajevo, H., The Load, Mediterranea and The Heiressess.

Joost de Vries - Guest Coach

Joost de Vries was a producer and CEO of the Amsterdam based renowned production company Lemming Film for over 20 years. In 2016 Joost decided to establish new company An Original Picture, which is focused on international productions. Moreover, he is a Managing Director of APostLab, post production workshops, training and network.

As a producer Joost de Vries is known for The Lobster (Academy Award-nominated and Cannes Jury Prize-winner), Oblivion Verses (Venice FIPRESCI Prize-winner), Humidity (Berlinale Forum 2016).
